19TH CENTURY PAINT DECORATED TOOL BOX. Third quarter 19th century, Mayadan, Rockingham County, North Carolina. Nice folk art tool box in the form of a house in original combed and grained green paint. Rectangular pitched roof hinged lid opening to a blue painted interior retaining supports for interior tray, tray now absent. Interior of lid with original mounting blocks for saws and other tools. Exterior with recessed panels. Pilasters continuing as legs with dark sponge decoration. SIZE: 37″ h overall x 41″ l x 26″ w overall. PROVENANCE: Purported by the current owner to have belonged to the Carter Family, African Americans residing in Mayadan, North Carolina, second half of the 19th century. CONDITION: Very good original condition with loss to interior tray as noted in description. 9-21777 (1,000-2,000)
