Additional Information – PROVENANCE: The historic Perry House on the harbor in Southport, CT, descended through the family.

AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE CARVED MAHOGANY SLANT LID DESK. Last quarter 18th century, probably New York. The rectangular dovetailed case fitted with a sloping hinged lid with thumbmolded edges opening to an interior of valanced pigeonholes, centering a shell carved door opening to a removable interior of pigeonholes and drawers, exposing two concealed valuables drawers, centering a shell carved prospect door, flanked by document drawers carved with stylized pineapples, further flanked by arrangements of small document drawers above molded lopers centering a long drawer over three additional graduated long drawers flanked by engaged fluted quarter columns, on a molded base, raised on ogee bracket feet with scalloped returns. SIZE: 42″ h x 42-1/4″ w (case) x 21-1/2″ d. CONDITION: Desk retains old original surfaces with dark patina, the sides with old visible shrinkage cracks on seam. The original bracket feet with repairs. Replaced hardware in newly drilled holes. Some damage to thumbmolding on one drawer. Old damage to right lower facing. 9-97208 (1,500-2,500)
