PAIR OF SALEM PAINT DECORATED LEATHER FIRE BUCKETS. Each bucket decorated with a banner above the date “1799” centering a displayed eagle above the word “SALEM”. The banner of one bucket identified by the title “SURGEON”, the second by the title “PAYMASTER”. Gold decoration and lettering on a black ground. The interiors in brick red and each retains original leather handle joined to brass carrying rings. SIZE: 11-1/2″ h x 8-1/2″ dia.; 17″ h (incl. handle) PROVENANCE: Robert Frederick Woolworth Estate, Monmouth, Maine. (F.W. Woolworth Store). CONDITION: Structurally very good. The paint decorated surfaces with wear and losses, especially to the eagle of the “SURGEON” bucket and within the banner and on the word “SALEM” on the “PAYMASTER” bucket. Losses to the black paint, especially on “PAYMASTER” bucket exposing an earlier green surface. 9-23553 (1,500-2,500)
