NEW AMERICAN PRACTICAL NAVIGATOR 1852 AND AMERICAN COAST PILOT 1854. Mid 19th century. The former property of Joseph S. Hatch, sea captain, Kennebunk, ME, each volume with his signature. The first, the 1852 edition of “The New American Practical Navigator: Being an Epitome of Navigation” by Nathaniel Bowditch complete with a chart of the Atlantic Ocean. Note Pg 256 contains a dried flower attached to the page and a notation in pencil “Given to JS Hatch by L. Hardin after words Mrs F Hatch”. Also found within, (a cartes de visite) annotated “My grandfather hatch – JRH Joseph Smith Hatch“. Second volume signed Jos. S. Hatch 1856 within the cover. In addition, the stamp of the retailer “Frederic W. Lincoln, Jr., Navigation Store, 136 Commercial Street, Boston” appears on the inside of front cover. Titled “The American Coast Pilot; containing DIRECTIONS for the PRINCIPAL HARBORS, CAPES AND HEADLANDS on the COASTS OF NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA”, May, 1854 edition by Edmund M. Blunt. Contains a chart of hurricane tracts of 1855 and 1854; a chart of the Gulf Stream by A.D. Bache, 1854; charts of Long Island Sound, Portsmouth Harbor, Delaware Bay and others. CONDITION: The leather bindings and covers of both in fair condition, several sections have come loose from spine. The pages in good overall condition, clear and readable without major weaknesses. There are creases and tears in the maps due to folding and use. 9-96454 (300-500)
