FINE AND RARE ENGLISH SABRETACHE OF MAJOR GEORGE HALL McLAUGHLIN (1859-1914). Last quarter 19th century. Stitched and quilted in gold thread, and of typical form, the leather pouch with three gold carrying rings to which were attached leather straps. The embroidery work features the Royal Coat of Arms above the scrolling motto and silver and gold thread “DIEU ET MON DROIT” The motto refers to the divine right of the monarch to govern, first adopted as the Royal Motto for England by King Henry IV. Beneath this is an additional motto on a burgundy ground “UBIQUE” above a spray of leaves beneath which is a piece of field artillery above a scrolling banner with the motto “QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT”, also on a burgundy ground. The whole within a gold stitched border. Now professionally mounted in a black shadowbox frame with museum glass.
