UNSIGNED (China Trade, Mid 19th Century) “SHIP LOOKOUT OF NEW YORK J.B. JOYCE, COMMANDER HONG KONG NOVEMBER 13TH, 1855”. Oil on canvas portrait of the black hulled three-mast ship sailing left to right flying American flag, Black Ball flag, and ship’s pennant. White capped light water with dark areas, the bottom margin supporting a hand painted title legend. Several ship’s are seen off bow & stern with an outstanding colorful sky. Housed in a Victorian walnut frame with gilt liner with wood gilt plaque “Clipper Ship Lookout Built by Chase & Davis, Warren, R.I.”. On reverse is a Kennedy Galleries, New York label, also a stamp from the restorer in 1960 “Gustav D. Klimann”. SIZE: 21″ x 26″. PROVENANCE: From a fine New Jersey home. CONDITION: Relined, stable craquelure, some inpainting, mostly to craquelure, otherwise very good. 9-24610 (7,000-10,000)
