CONNECTICUT FEDERAL CHERRY & BIRCH BOWFRONT CHEST OF DRAWERS. Circa 1800, probably Coastal Connecticut. Mounted with a complete set of Eagle brass hardware; each stamped “HJ” for Thomas Hands and William Jenkins, a Birmingham, England company in business from 1791-1803. Note, secondary woods are comprised of white pine and chestnut. The rectangular top with bowfront molded edge above a conforming case fitted with four long drawers with cockbeaded edges on a molded base raised on outcurved tall French feet with scalloped returns. SIZE: 34-1/4″ h x 40″ w x 21-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: Connecticut family home which descended from Sarah Upson Goodrich (Mrs. Oliver R. Beckwith) who descended from the Rev. Charles Chauncey, President of Harvard College and Elder William Brewster. Sarah was a member of the Connecticut chapter of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. CONDITION: Structurally very good with original brasses and original backboards, glue blocks and feet. Chest has been professionally repolished at some point in time. With small losses to cockbeading at edges of drawers. Very small shrinkage cracks at ends of top of chest. 9-21870 (1,500-2,500)
