CENTENNIAL CHIPPENDALE CARVED MAHOGANY SLANT-LID DESK. Second half 18th century, probably Massachusetts. This fine benchmade example with hinged sloping lid carved with a central scallop shell above scrolling leaf tips flanked by additional carved shells. The lid opening to an interior of valanced pigeon holes and document drawers. The case fitted with a blocked long drawer carved with shell at the center, flanked by lopers above a kneehole fitted with recessed carved door with scallop shell above a draped tassel, flanked by banks of three drawers, joined to the gadrooned and molded base raised on short cabriole legs, shell carved at the knees terminating in ball and claw feet. SIZE: 40-1/2″ h x 38″ w x 21-1/2″ d. CONDITION: Desk with original surfaces and brasses. Chip to lower right outside edge of lid. One return absent.
