FINE CHINA TRADE BLACK LACQUER GILT DECORATED MIRRORED DRESSING CHEST. First quarter 19th century. Oval mirror within a gilt decorated conforming frame with scrolling arabesque crest, swiveling on yoke form supports, mounted on small dresser base. The chest with two raised long drawers set back on base fitted with two additional long drawers, all with serpentine fronts, raised on molded bracket base. The whole in black lacquer with diagonal gilded panels, decorated with floral sprays. Reference: for similar example see fig 532 on page 204 of The Mirror Book, English, American & European by Herbert F. Schiffer. SIZE: 33″ h x 16″ w x 12″ d. PROVENANCE: Connecticut family home which descended from Sarah Upson Goodrich (Mrs. Oliver R. Beckwith) who descended from the Rev. Charles Chauncey, President of Harvard College and Elder William Brewster. Sarah was a member of the Connecticut chapter of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. CONDITION: Lacquered surfaces dried and with craquelure. Gilded decorations with substantial wear. Mirror frame with splits at seams. Otherwise all original. 9-21861 (1,000-1,500)
