IMPORTANT LOCKET WITH LOCKS OF GEORGE & MARTHA WASHINGTON’S HAIR. The teardrop shaped locket with bow top having beveled glass front and back. The bow having nine pink cut stones with a banner intertwined with white enamel and letters “AMILLE GAGE”. The extension of the banner on the bottom with “MON DE”. The locket was descended in the family as follows: Belonged first to Mrs. Tobias Lear; She gave it to Admiral George Washington Storer who gave it to his daughter Mary Washington Storer who gave it to Mabel Storer Decatur who gave it to Ann Decatur Peirce who gave it to the present owner. Accompanying the locket is a small envelope which is inscribed with old handwriting “Locket which belonged to Mrs. A.L. Jones – containing hair of Gen & Mrs. Washington given to Adml. Storer by Mrs. Tobias Lear”. Tobias Lear was George Washington’s military and private secretary, also friend, and was the brother of the wife of Captain Samuel Storer. Samuel Storer’s daughter Mabel married William Beverly Decatur (who changed his name legally to Stephen Decatur, the consignor’s great grandfather). The consignor’s grandfather Stephen Decatur Jr. wrote the book The Private Affairs of George Washington. This book was written from the Tobias Lear’s papers. Tobias Lear was brother-in-law to Captain Samuel Storer and the consignor is directly descended from Captain Samuel Storer.
