JAMES GAYLE TYLER (American, 1855-1931) PORTRAIT OF THE TUGBOAT H.A. CRAWFORD. Large oil on canvas scene shows the Crawford sailing right to left having three men aboard, one at the wheel of the wheelhouse which is decorated with a gold pilot eagle. An American flag and ships pennant fly off a flagpole at the stern and “H.A.C.” flag off flagpole at bow. They approach a three-mast ship off the bow which is a depiction of the “Savannah” whose name is on the back sail. This tugboat went to the rescue of the Savannah’s crew after a crash in New York Harbor and then towed the Savannah to safety. Signed lower left “J G Tyler” and “Oswego”. Housed in a good gilt molded wood frame with artist plaque. Frame having a Kennedy Galleries, Inc. New York label. SIZE: 27″ x 34″. PROVENANCE: Kennedy Galleries to The Harbor Yacht Club, Hampton Bays, VA. CONDITION: Wax relining, some inpainting. Very good. 9-97589 (15,000-20,000)
