AUTOGRAPH, THOMAS CLAYTON WOLFE (American, 1900-1938). First quarter 20th century. Written on a small piece of paper in pencil script “Her life was like a great wave breaking in the lonely sea – Oh, the wonder, the magic and the loss! Thomas Wolfe“. Quoted in Patricia Neal, An Unquiet Life by Stephen Michael Shearer and Grayson Hall: A Hard Act to Follow by R. J. Jamison. The original quote “O, the wonder, the magic and the loss! His life was like a great wave breaking in the lonely sea;” from Look Homeward, Angel by Thomas Wolfe, published in 1929. This example is being offered with the original book in which it was discovered Ballads and Miscellanies Vol XIII from The Works of William Makepeace Thackery published in 1899. One could surmise that this particular volume was possibly owned by Mr. Thomas Wolfe. SIZE: 4″ h x 5-1/2″ w. CONDITION: Paper yellowed with age but retaining clarity of verse and signature. Note the corresponding discoloration within the pages of the book (pages 622-623). 9-99690 (400-600)
