WILLIAM EDGAR MARSHALL (American, 1837-1906) PORTRAIT OF HENRY W. LONGFELLOW. The large steel engraving depicts an oval bust portrait of Longfellow surrounded by small vignettes of his works. Pencil signed at bottom center by Longfellow himself and pencil signed by Marshall lower right. Housed in a modern gilt molded wood frame with wonderful decorated wide white matte. Accompanying the lot is a newspaper article regarding the death of Francis O’Brien who was instrumental in reviving Portland, Maine’s interest in their most famous native son, Henry W. Longfellow. O’Brien rescued the last few surviving examples of the autographed engravings and placed some in important Portland landmarks. This was one of the few to get into private hands.
