HUBLEY ELGIN STREET SWEEPER. A fabulous and intricate cast iron toy created by the Hubley firm emulating in miniature the street sweeper that cleaned city streets in the early 20th century. It’s hard to believe a company would go to such efforts and produce such a complicated toy, right down to a lever by the driver that would activate the simulated the sprayer, scrubbing brushes on either side, and a cylindrical brush. As you roll the toy along the ground, a coil spring activated by the wheels would engage the brush. Toy retains original cloth hose with iron fitting that the operator would refill the water tank and continue cleaning. Removable driver enameled in white (replaced) is perched upon a nickel plated seat. Toy is enameled in gray with gilt trim with a fair amount of nickel plated accessories and pieces such as radiator, water tank, etc. When one studies the toy, it is truly amazing and much more like a model than a toy for a child. It is always interesting to wonder why toy companies produced certain pieces, and if they were really played with and enjoyed by children. What young boy would want to play with a street sweeper? SIZE: 8-1/2″ l. CONDITION: Overall good to very good with some uniform paint wear and chipping. A good cleaning and polishing of nickel plated parts would certainly enhance this toy. 1-12848 (1,500-2,500)
