JAMES SANDFORD ELLSWORTH (American, 1802-1874) PAIR OF MINIATURE AMERICAN FOLK ART PORTRAITS. Second quarter of the 19th C. Pair of miniature watercolor half portraits presented here are of an elderly woman depicted with a ribbon tied lace bonnet in a black dress seated reading a book. The initials “JSE” inscribed lower right. The second portrait is of an elderly gentleman with white hair in a blue/black coat holding a closed book. The printed inscription “J.S.E. Ptr.” in lower left. Both portraits with the cloud like framing of the heads and lower body characteristic of Ellsworth’s works. Mounted in period frames. SIZE: 3″ x 2-3/4″. CONDITION: Somewhat faded but otherwise structurally good. 9-97043 (2,500-4,000)
