EXCEPTIONAL ISANNA SMITH PAINT DECORATED DOCUMENT BOX. Circa 1800. The dove-tailed birch and pine box with hinged lid, decorated overall in mustard yellow and with green spandrels of leaf tips within black line borders. The lid with oval patera, centering the owner’s name, centered above and below with half flower head with radiating petals. The front of the box paint decorated with an armorial crest headed by a six-pointed rayed star. Each end, painted with a large, green, oval flower. The open interior of the box with the pencil signature in script, “ISANNA SMITH”. SIZE: 6″h x 14-1/2″l x 9-1/2″d. PROVENANCE: Connecticut family home which descended from Sarah Upson Goodrich (Mrs. Oliver R. Beckwith) who descended from the Rev. Charles Chauncey, President of Harvard College and Elder William Brewster. Sarah was a member of the Connecticut chapter of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. CONDITION: Structurally very good, with undisturbed painted surfaces, showing normal and expected craquelure. The box edges with chaffing and wear. Very good overall. 9-21857 (2,000-4,000)
