OUTSTANDING FOLK ART 19TH CENTURY “BARK MESSENGER” FRIENDSHIP/ALBUM QUILT. Circa 1850. This outstanding quilt with cutout to accommodate posts at the foot of the bed has 70 10-1/2″ squares, mostly with appliques. The border with appliqued & pieced triangles in various patterns. The quilt was made in Maine and has references to the town of Weston and the City of Portland. One of the blocks is dated “1850” and a central signature indicates the quilt maker was I. Wilson. The central blocks are nautical related, one having a needlework three-mast ship flying U.S. flag with penned label “Bark Messenger Laden with Friendship Bound to Wellfleet I Wilson”. Below is a panel with an anchor & chain within a circle. The other blocks having flowers and design symbols including basket of flowers, rose, wreath, stars, horse, & one with ox, plow & yoke. Also, one with broderie perse wreath surrounding two children. Many of the squares have the label of the maker, also bible verses, quotes, greetings & personal reflections. The upper left block making a reference to the recipient of the quilt as follows: “Go humble square and fill some nook for friend Hatera’s quilt and when at this you chance to look at one, Dear Cousin, think of Alice Sweeter”. Because each block was developed independently there is different quilting design. REFERENCE: This quilt was featured on page 12-16 of Fons & Porter’s “Love of Quilting” magazine, May/June 2011 issue. SIZE: 105″ x 99″ with 23″ x 23″ cutout to accommodate posts. CONDITION: Some stains, minor popping in brown triangle side piece. 9-22181 (8,000-12,000)
