WONDERFUL FOLK CARVED LIMESTONE PLAQUE OF LEGENDARY PUGILIST JOHN L. SULLIVAN. This limestone plaque features a wonderful rendition of the first gloved heavyweight champion of the world. Sullivan was born in 1858 and died in 1918 and was the first heavyweight champion of gloved boxing from February 7th 1882 to 1892. He was also the last heavyweight champion of bare knuckle boxing under the London prize ring rules and also the first American athlete to earn over a million dollars. The plaque is a wonderful relief likeness of Sullivan in his crossed arm pose looking to his right. Facial features and hair wonderfully executed. The reverse of the stone carved in relief, “J.L.S.”. Nothing is known about the very accomplished artist that executed the likeness, but it was found in central Maine and dates to the late 19th century. A wonderful bold depiction. SIZE: 13-1/4″ x 12″.
