EXCEPTIONAL RENAISSANCE REVIVAL OAK TALL CASE CLOCK WITH J.C. JENNENS & SON MOVEMENT. Last third 19th century. England. The exquisitely carved quarter sawn oak case with arched molded cornice carved with anthemion leaves. The frieze carved with a central rosette containing the busts of a renaissance page and maiden. Both with period trappings. The arched bonnet door with guilloche-carved moldings flanked by carved pedestals, each mounted with a bust figure. The molded waist fitted with an arched molded door with beveled glass panel, again flanked by carved busts on square tapering columns. The box base with central fielded panel, carved guilloches, and with a central oval patera within leave-tip spandrels carved with the bust of a long haired young boy flanked by engaged tapered columns. The stepped molded base raised on frontal claw feet. The case houses a movement labeled “J.C. JENNENS & SON/ GT. SUTTON STREET LONDON” The time, strike, and musical movement with nine hammers with eight bells. The silvered Arabic numeral chapter ring, with black enameled numerals, each painted on a scrolled brass cartouche all set within the chased brass dial engraved overall with scrolling leaf tips, mounted with a circular sweep seconds dial, a chime/silent dial, and a subsidiary dial marked “CHIME ON EIGHT BELLS/ WEST MINSTER CHIMES”. All beneath an arched calendar dial within which is set a painted moon phase. SIZE: 9’ 1 1/2” h. x throat w. 18” x overall d. 19”. CONDITION: The case in very fine original condition with minor and minimal losses to the hair and nose of the figure on proper left side of box base. Otherwise very good with original surfaces and fine patina. The movement with craquelure in moon phase dial, and with minor losses in enameled numerals.
