OUTSTANDING FREDERIC WINGATE FEDERAL TALL CASE CLOCK. Circa 1820. Frederic Wingate, (1782-1864), Augusta, ME. The bonnet with three brass ball-and-spire finials centering the pierced crest above the molded cornice. The arched door flanked by freestanding columns with brass capitals and bases opening to a painted face decorated with clusters of fruit inscribed “Frederic Wingate Augusta No. 179”. The gilt spandrels each painted with a single peach centering a Roman numeral chapter ring, sweep second subsidiary dial, calendar aperture, and time & strike apertures. The eight-day brass works original to the face. The throat with engaged quarter columns centering a molded rectangular panel door opening to the case interior retaining the original paper label of the maker affixed to the backboard indicating “Bought in 1829″ in pencil. The throat joined to the concave molded box base, raised on French feet centering a scalloped and shaped apron. The pine case with a simulated rosewood grained finish. SIZE: Ht 93″ Throat Width: 13 3/4″ D 9 1/2” PROVENANCE: By descent through the Jewett family of Solon, Maine being the original owner who purchased the clock in 1820. CONDITION: The case and works appear all original with minor restoration to pierced crest, some losses to base molding, and an old break in case below lower hinge on case door. 9-97724 (10,000-15,000)
