IMPORTANT PAIR PHILADELPHIA CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY SIDE CHAIRS ATTRIBUTED TO BENJAMIN RANDOLPH. Third quarter 18th century. The serpentine crest rail with flared rolled ears centering a carved shell above the pierced splat of carved scrolling volutes, the back with fluted stiles joined to the trapezoidal molded seat frame carved with a central scalloped shell raised on frontal cabriole legs with shaped returns and shell-carved knees raised on ball and claw feet. The rear cylindrical legs backswept and joined to the seat frame with mortise and tenon construction. Note: Two additional examples attributed to the work of Benjamin Randolph illustrate similarities of design and execution, most notably in the transition of the rear leg from cylindrical to block form at seat rail, the treatment of the volutes within the pierced splats, the positioning of the shell carving on crest and seat rail in addition to the stepped arch treatment of the front seat rail. The example from the Reifsynder Collection also illustrates the similarity in the serpentine crest rail and treatment of the ears. The second example illustrated in Fig. 6, p.42 of Philadelphia Furniture & Its Makers from the Antiques Magazine Library, edited by John J. Snyder, Jr. SIZE: 38-3/4″ h of back; 21-1/2″ w of seat; 21-3/4″ w of chair; 19″ overall d; 17-1/2″ h of seat; 21-3/4″ w of back.
