LARGE AUTOGRAPHED BRADY CABINET IMAGE OF GEN. U.S. GRANT. This autographed image of Grant depicts him in full uniform outside of his tent leaning on a tree. This famous image was taken by Brady at Cold Harbor, VA in June, 1864. Just a short while after Abraham Lincoln had promoted him to Lt. Gen. of all US armies (March 12, 1864). Grant had continually exhibited his ability to fight, but also to win. At the time Lincoln was desperate for a leader who would not only coalesce his military, but could likely expedite the defeat of the Confederacy. Despite numerous criticisms regarding Grant, Lincoln stuck to his decision and Grant not only defeated the Confederacy but after the war was held in such high esteem by the nation, that he was eventually elected President (a position he did not personally pursue). Card marked “Brady” at lower left below the image and to the right below the image “Washington”. The card is autographed below the image “US Grant” and below it “Lt Gen..” last word is not clear but appears to be US Army. SIZE: Card is 7-3/4″ w x approx. 10-3/4″ h. Image only is 5″ w x 7-1/4″ h. CONDITION: Image is slightly faded. Autograph is strong and distinct. Card is generally in excellent condition. 9-21896 (9,000-12,000)
