ALBERT E. DOWNS (American, 19th Century) “OFF MONTEVIDEO S.A.”. Oil on canvas nautical scene shows several ships in stormy sea including two two-mast ships with partial sails up and another two-mast fishing boat with three men at stern. The bows ply through uplifting waves with hints of green & white tips. The left corner has a broken mast from a shipwreck and the sky is graduating from blue & white clouds to dark storm clouds. Housed in a wonderful period gesso decorated frame with pineapple decoration at the border. Signed bottom right “A E Downs 1886”. Titled, signed, and dated “1882” on reverse. Little is known about this artist who certainly shows talent in his marine scenes. SIZE: 22″ x 36″. CONDITION: Chip off upper right corner, mostly under frame, very good with some surface dirt. 9-23586 (3,000-5,000)
