MARGARET BOURKE-WHITE (American, 1904-1971) SUNDAY SERMON-COLLEGE GROVE, TENNESSEE. Black bordered, vintage photograph, circa 1936, shows a man standing beside a pulpit on a small stage with small picket fence. Several men and women of the parish are seated on the back and to the side of him. A pot belly stove is in the foreground. Back having inscribed in pencil “R 96”. At this time Margaret was in Georgia with Erskine Caldwell gathering photographs for their book “You Have Seen Their Faces”. This family grouping in a slightly different pose was used as the front cover of this book. We have been unable to find another image of this photograph published. NOTE: Other photographs from this series are contained in “You Have Seen Their Faces” by Caldwell & Bourke-White. SIZE: Photograph: 7″ x 9″. PROVENANCE: Erskine Caldwell’s wife (Mt. Vernon, Maine); to our consignor’s father through descent. CONDITION: One small closed puncture bottom right, otherwise very good. 9-99883 (2,000-3,000)
