REMINGTON/BEALS NAVY REVOLVER & HOLSTER BELONGING TO BENJAMIN WILLIAMS, ASST. SURGEON OF 8TH MAINE REGIMENT WITH DISPLAY CASE. Cal. 36. SN 449. Blued finish, 7-1/2” oct bbl with crisp markings, 2-pc walnut grips. Dr. Benjamin Williams (Born 1836) served in his capacity as assistant surgeon from the Siege of Petersburg to the surrender of Gen. Lee at Appomattox, VA (1864-1866-Natl. Archive Records). This revolver, holster & belt buckle may have actually been present at this event. Revolver is void of military inspector’s marks & is a civilian model purchased on open market by U.S. Gov’t, or private purchase by Dr. Williams. This is unusual for a surgeon to have carried a firearm during the war as medical personal were generally considered non-combatants. After the war, Dr. Williams served several years as mayor of Rockland, Maine (1886-87) and also served as prison doctor at the Maine State Prison, Thomaston, Maine. (Died 1910). Accompanied by a 13-1/4” x 16-1/4” red velveteen lined display case made by consignor. It contains a hanger for the revolver, an orig officer’s belt buckle from Civil War period, an orig Civil War holster for this revolver & a black & white photograph of Dr. Williams. CONDITION: Fine. Overall retains a smooth enhanced brown patina with fine pitting on frame. Grips are sound with light handling & use marks & retain a hand worn patina. Mechanics are fine.
