ANTIQUE HAGIJALLI TABRIZ ORIENTAL RUG, NORTHWEST PERSIA. First half 19th century. Woven with a tree of life within a rocky grotto in shades of beige, brown and green, the tree filled with exotic birds and pendant flowers, further flanked at the base by grazing mountain goats and birds. The upper wine-red spandrels woven with coiling dragons each devouring a human figure. Within a blue-black and beige main border of floral baskets flanked by undulating ribbons. The upper panel between the main border and central field woven with 3 cartouches, each with Arabic writing (see photos). SIZE: 6′ 11″ x 4′ 10″. CONDITION: This fine antique example with areas of wear to foundation and losses to selvage and ends still makes a strong statement and is salvageable. 9-97511 (4,000-5,000)
