PAIR OF FINE VENETIAN CARVED AND EBONIZED FIGURES OF THE DEVIL AND HIS CONSORT. Late 19th century. Having carved signature “F. Toso, Venezia” on the proper left waistcoat pocket of the male figure. The devil depicted standing in tails, waistcoat, and ruffled cravat, right webbed hand outstretched, left hand in pocket, depicted with horned brow, mustache and forked goatee, having goat legs, cloven hoofs, and long tail. His consort with striped bonnet, high-collared fitted jacket, and similarly striped long dress and pointed slippers, the figure with winged shoulders, upraised right hand, the left arm at her side, her hand with extended forefinger pointing downward. The figures remained in the Ames family until they were placed on long-term loan to the Fuller Museum in 1975, and then given to the museum in 1979, subsequently de-accessioned. CONDITION: The figures retain original surfaces with fine old patina and warm polychrome tones. There are minor professional repairs.
