OTIS W. WHITTIER (ENFIELD, NH) ZIGZAG REVOLVING CYLINDER GUN, SERIAL NUMBER “1”, PROBABLY A PATENT MODEL. SN NSN. Cal..590 Bore diameter. Issued in 1837, the first patent to use the “zigzag” method of revolving a cylinder, was taken out by O. W. Whittier of Enfield, NH. This gun is serial number “1”, and was featured on the cover of January 1964 THE GUN REPORT. 35-1/4″ Tapered octagon to round barrel is stamped “1” on bottom, and on semi-buckhorn rear sight. German silver blade front sight is dovetailed through top of bbl. There is acanthus engraving at breech and muzzle. Iron frame with screw attached bottom plate is stamped “1” under top strap and on right side of frame extension. Top strap is engraved with open scroll and acanthus. Large six-shot cylinder with rotating grooves around outside, is stamped “1” at front and rear. Large axle is also stamped “1” and is retained by spring-loaded catch at rear of frame. Hammerless mechanism is cocked by large rear trigger which also rotates cylinder and locks it with protruding pin. Long top tang is also engraved, and stamped “Patent”. Stock is finished with dark, almost black, varnish, and mounts are German silver. Trigger guard has long bow with folded tail to form grip. Engraved crescent buttplate has long spear tang, and matching return is fitted with cap box. Right side of stock has engraved German silver patchbox. PROVENANCE: Ex Eldon Owens Coll. Copy of GUN REPORT featuring this gun on cover. October 5, 2004. CONDITION: Fine. Iron is mostly smooth brown patina. Original stock finish shows many marks and knocks. Mechanism works fairly well, with a bit of a hitch between rotations. All guns of this patent are extremely rare. Flayderman estimates that fewer than 100 were made in all configurations. 4-39893 MGM162 (10,000-15,000)
