CORRECTION: Our catalogue indicated that the “COMA” mark indicated manufacture by Comizazzo of Italy. It is actually a Madrid, Spain mark listed as #192 on page 233 if the new Stockel. This Coma worked from 1720-1740 in Ripol, Spain and Madrid. Spanish barrels enjoyed a reputation for excellence.

PAIR OF GASPAR ZELNER FLINTLOCK PISTOLS. SN NSN. Cal..630 Bore diameter. Several generations have borne the name of Gaspar Zelner, which appears on wheelocks during the 1600’s and flintlocks of the 1700’s. These guns probably date to the third quarter of the 18th century. They have 14″ twisted steel barrels with gold poincon marked “COMA” (Cominazzo, Lazzarino IV, last member of this famed Italian barrel making family, he worked during the second half of the 18th century). Tops of bbls have raised relief filing, and gold-wire inlay. “C. Zelner” is engraved on top flats. Breech plugs are mounted with brass U-notched rear sights. Locks with slightly rebated long tails have broad flat serpentine hammers, faceted pans, unbridled frizzens, and friction springs with foliate finials. Lockplates are engraved with buxom lass sitting amongst flags and drums. “Caspar Zelner” is engraved behind cocks, and “In Wienn” is between leaves of frizzen springs. Cocks and frizzens have fine raised relief acanthus scroll with shaded background. Frizzen springs are file decorated. All furniture is brass. Multi-pierced and scrolled sideplates mount two brass screws. Trigger guards are decorated with relief scroll. Bulbous pistol grip butts match relief engraved scroll with straps extending almost to lockplates. Matching crest plates are at tops of grips. Burl walnut stocks have raised relief carving around furniture, with carved scroll onto forepieces. Stocks extend to muzzles with carved horn tips. Walnut ramrods have horn tips, and mount through faceted and beaded pipes. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain a considerable amount of what may be original brown, with some pattern showing. Locks have most of their bright polish. Brass has been cleaned and is bright. Stocks retain original surface with some wear, and has oil rubbed in. Locks and frizzens are crisp. Bores are good, bright. 4-40209 MGM164 (10,000-15,000)
