STUDIO OF JEAN-BAPTISTE LEPRINCE (French, 18th Century) THE SLEIGH RIDE. Rare reverse painted oil on glass scene depicts a man wearing skates and colorful costume pushing a fancy single person sleigh. An elegant young lady dressed in fine costume is riding. Her pink robe lined in mink. The sleigh has metal runners and is adorned with a full bodied swan in the front. They pass a mill building with waterwheel under blue and cloud sky. Signed lower right “J. B. Leprince, 1779”. We beleive this painting to be after or in the style of a painting by Jean Honoré Fragonard (French, 1732-1806). The technique of reverse painting on glass requires a high degree of skill since the layers of paint are reversed thus the signature would be placed and then the scene, in this case, the rocks and grass, are painted over in subsequent layers. This is an outstanding example of this technique, certainly done by someone in Leprince’s studio or Leprince himself. Housed in a gilt incised decorated wood frame. REFERENCE: For history and details on reverse painting techniques, refer to Mildred Lee Ward’s book “Reverse Paintings on Glass”. SIZE: Sight: 17-1/4″ x 24-1/4″. PROVENANCE: Private Collection from Rangley, Maine. CONDITION: Very good. 9-94993 (5,000-10,000)
