RARE CONFEDERATE 6TH INFANTRY NORTH CAROLINA BELT BUCKLE. This particular buckle is rarely found in non-excavated condition, most all specimens were dug up in early campsites after the battle of 1st Manassas. These cast brass plates had soldered hooks which often failed and probably for that reason, few non-excavated specimens survived with all Heir books. This particular specimen must have had hook problems too as it has been turned into a piece of jewelry with no hooks and now a t-bar pin has been soldered to back. Occasionally similar pieces of jewelry made from Confederate buttons or buckles were worn as Victorian decorations or to reunions similar to sweetheart jewelry of WWI and WWII. This buckle measures 71.4 x 51.2 mm. The buckle appears original and authentic in every regard and is identical to specimens pictured in Kerksis & Mullinax CONDITION: Surface of buckle has a yellow patina with brown color in protected areas. Surface of buckle has numerous small scratches from wear. Reverse of buckle has a darker patina overall. Original filed finishing marks and remnants of original solder from original hooks are still present on back 4-40833 JS34 (2,500-3,500)
