TWO PAINT-DECORATED DOCUMENT BOXES. American, mid-19th century. The smaller in yellow paint with borders of graduated multiple striping in shades of black, green & cinnamon. The top centrally mounted with a brass bale and the initials “MF”. The second example in mottled dark green paint with overall sponge decoration. The center of the lid mounted with a brass bale, the box with iron hasp and lock. SIZE: 1) 6″h x 14″l x 8″d.; 2) 10″h x 22″l x 10-1/4″d. CONDITION: The first with some spotty loss of paint, otherwise very good. The second with painted surfaces mostly intact, horizontal shrinkage cracks in lid and with wear and abrasion to painted surfaces at edges, within normal parameters. Good overall. 9-24425 (700-800)
