FINE CHIPPENDALE CARVED MAHOGANY TEA TABLE, POSSIBLY SOUTH CAROLINA. Second half 18th century. The circular one-board top with scalloped pie crust edge, hinged and swiveling on a bird-cage support, joined to the urn-form fluted columnar standard, the urn acanthus-carved, raised on tripod cabriole legs, each with a cartouche carved with C-scrolls, leaftips, and bellflower, terminating in slender well defined ball-and-talon carved feet. SIZE: 27-1/4″ h. x 25″ dia. PROVENANCE: From the estate of a Southern collector, with Charleston, South Carolina, provenance. CONDITION: Table with dry old finish. Top and latch reset, with old patched screw-holes showing in top surface. Bird-cage upper support with old repairs and now glued to standard, key present. Old restored damage at knee of one leg.
