JAMES DODS (Early 19th Century) “VIEW OF BELMONT IN THE ISLAND OF GRENADA WEST INDIES”. Large watercolor panoramic view of a large plantation. At the bottom middle of the scene is a legend “View of Belmont in the island of Grenada West Indies, The property of Governor Houstoun of Clerkington East Lothian by James Dods, Overseer, Taken in the end of March, 1821 on the approach of a thunderstorm”. The fabulous rendered scene shows a large plantation house with the owner standing in full uniform in front amongst tropical trees and bushes. A variety of buildings including a mill, livestock area, and slave quarters can be seen on the cultivated hillside and land. Nine native slaves can be seen harvesting a small field near the waterwheel of the mill. A lightning bolt from dark clouds with glimpses of blue signals the approaching storm. Housed in a fine ogee reproduction frame. NOTE: The Belmont Plantation stayed within the same family for more than 170 years and is presently a working plantation still growing the coffee it has always been known for. SIZE: Sight: 16-1/2″ x 25-1/2″. CONDITION: Considering its age it is very good with some restoration, affixed to board. 9-20898 (4,000-6,000)
