THE RIDGELY FAMILY SHERATON CARVED MAHOGANY CANOPY BED, MARYLAND. Circa 1830. Each swelled post richly carved with opposing acanthus leaves, ring-turned above a similarly carved urn-form element, continuing to the blocked and faceted post above urn-turned leg with ringed cuff on cylindrical foot. The paneled headboard with rolled pillow crest and fan-carved ears, above carved drapery swags and tassel, joined by flowerheads and flanked by fruit-filled cornucopia. The whole accompanied by original canopy frame. SIZE: 88″h x 64-1/2″ w x 80″ l (Overall) 54″w x 72″l (interior). PROVENANCE: This beautiful example, custom made and carved in the Caribbean for the Ridgely family of Hampton Mansion, Annapolis/Baltimore County, Maryland, around 1830; by descent through the family to Dorothy Harrison, great-great-great-granddaughter of Col. Henry Ridgely II, passed on as a wedding gift where it had been in storage at the Baltimore Inn (built by Dorsey Harrison, son of Charles Harrison and Deborah Ridgely) to the current owner, a second cousin. CONDITION: Very fine original condition with excellent patina, rich dark brown color, and deep quality carvings. No structural defects. Canopy and mattress frame original.
