SIGNED (Italian, 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF THE BRIG STEPHEN BISHOP. Gouache watercolor showing the black hulled two-mast ship sailing right to left into an Italian harbor. Several small boats are seen off the bow and stern with a low mountain background. Several figures are seen on deck. A US flag and ship pennant off back mast. The ships name emblazoned in gold on the back side. A hand written legend in margin “Brig Stephen Bishop W.B. Gilkey Master December 2 1859”. It is signed bottom right indistinctly, possible “Celi”. Housed in a black molded wood frame. SIZE: Sight: 19″ x 24-1/2″. PROVENANCE: From a fine Searsport, Maine home. CONDITION: Shadow lines at top and a corner crack at left top.
