RARE AND IMPORTANT RITTENHOUSE & POTTS SURVEYOR’S COMPASS. Late 18th century, Philadelphia. The 5-1/2″ silvered dial with original blue silvered needle joined to a functioning needle lifter. The needle ring divided into thirty second increments. The eight point rose with hatched and patterned engravings, the cardinal point similarly engraved. The center of dial engraved “RITTENHOUSE & POTTS.” The 6-1/4″ sight veins appear original. The level on the North point also appears original and functional. The compass retains its original protective brass cover. SIZE: Overall dia 6-1/4″. Overall l with veins 13-3/4″. Overall h including adapter: 8-1/4″. CONDITION: Surfaces appear original and untouched. The silvered dial with uneven patina. The adapter socket beneath the compass functional. Apart from some minor surface corrosion, the case and compass are in overall very good condition. 9-28573 (4,000-8,000)
