CLAUDE JOSEPH VERNET (French, 1714-1789) SHIP WRECKED. Oil on canvas scene shows a coastline with storm clouds and rough seas. A floundering ship is seen wrecking against rocks while people on shore are looking on and assisting. There is a ship aground and another ship heading toward shore. A dock area has two figures and several other people braving the storm. There is a hole in the gray skies which sheds light on the scene. Housed in a deep gesso decorated gold painted antique frame. SIZE: 18” x 24”. CONDITION: Relined, masking varnish does not allow to determine restoration or inpainting. There is a crack just above the blue sky. Otherwise good. 9-72588 (20,000-30,000)
