UNSIGNED (American 1st Quarter of 20th Century) NAP JUTRAS 1915. Oil on canvas portrait of a standing Native American holding peace pipe, chief’s blanket and necklace. His long black hair has been bound in a pony tail and a medallion hangs from his bear claw necklace. He wears bead-decorated moccasins and a feathered headdress. He stands on a grass stream bank with pine trees behind. Titled and dated below his feet. Probably a depiction of a member of either the Iroquois or Mohawk tribe. It is rare to find a period painting with this subject matter. Housed in a period gesso decorated gilt frame with gilt liner. SIZE: 38″ x 24″. CONDITION: Small patch to reverse, craquelure, with discolored varnish. Found in an old New Hampshire collection. 7-70095 (6,000-9,000)
