OUTSTANDING NEAR RECORD POLAR BEAR RUG HARVESTED IN ALASKA IN 1959. This fine large example of an Alaskan Polar Bear rug harvested in 1959 by Richard White while on a hunting expedition with Colonel Phillip F. Neuweiler. This large example was in 1959, at that time, the 3rd largest Polar Bear harvested in the world. The bear skin was later mounted by Jonas Brothers Taxidermist of Denver, Co., renowned for their expertise in preserving wildlife trophies. At the time the current owner acquired this rug from the family of Dr. White, he again sent it to Jonas Brothers for cleaning and refurbishment. NOTE: This exact bear is illustrated and discussed in the book, “Big Game Trails in the Far North” by Col. Phillip F. Neuweiler. On page 284, there is a photo of this bear just after it was harvested. In the photo clearly illustrated is a scar below the right eye. This exact same scar is of course also still present today on our bear rug. The photo is captioned “Phil and his friend, Dr. Richard White, of Allentown, Pa. With Doc’s big Polar bear, 1959″. On pages 92 and 92, the author, Phillip Neuweiler describes a hunt in which he shot a very large bear, the second largest ever harvested, later measure by the local game warden and wildlife expert in the area where they were camping. This bear is mentioned in the following sentence, “Doc White and I now have the number 2, 3, and 4 polar bears in the world. Our bear is Dr. White’s bear which Neuweiler refers to and was the number 3 bear in 1959. In the next paragraph the following quote is made, “The wildlife expert is the one who measured Doc’s and my bear, and recorded the measurements”. Please note: An affidavit signed by the current owner accompanies this Polar Bear rug attesting to the date of harvesting and provenance which places the Polar Bear rug well within the limits authorizing the sale of and transportation over state lines. In addition, we have contacted the Federal Fish and Wildlife Division in Washington and Alaska and have confirmed that because the bear was clearly documented as being harvested in 1959 it is legal to sell and transport. An outstanding and beautiful trophy bear. SIZE: 95” nose to tail, 86” right front paw to right rear paw, 84” left front paw to left rear paw, 95” front left paw to front right paw, 101” rear left paw to rear right paw, 129” right front paw to left rear paw, 125” left front paw to right rear paw. CONDITION: Overall very good. Fur entirely intact with good coloration throughout. Diagonal scar below proper right eye. 9-25464 (4,000-6,000)
