Additional Information: It has come to our attention that the View of Castine from Hospital Island was Fitz Henry Lane’s most important lithograph. Lane marketed this lithograph himself via subscription and limited it to only 100 subscriptions, therefore it is exceedingly rare and only a few are known to exist. Examples of this print exist in the Boston Athenaeum, Yale and Harvard Collections. This important print is mentioned in the Wilmerding books on Fitz Henry Lane. It is not only a rare Lane lithograph but it is fresh to the market and has been in the Nickerson family for generations. In consideration of all this, we realize that the estimate is highly conservative. It is being sold unreserved so current demand will surely dictate current value.
