UNSIGNED (Second quarter of 19th Century) FOLK ART FAMILY PORTRAIT. Outstanding large oil on canvas family portrait showing the father seated in a fancy carved and upholstered green sofa holding a painting in one hand and a magnifying glass in the other. His wife is seated on a matching chair under a large window holding an open book with needlework in her lap and holding the end of a ball of yarn which has fallen to the floor and a small cat plays with it. Behind the father stands a daughter who also holds an oval framed painting. To the left of the father stands the artist daughter of the family. She is holding an artist pallet in one hand and a brush in the other. Next to her is a tall marble top stand with silver basket of peaches. A dog sits in front of the scene looking up at the artist. In the lower left corner is a large book which is dated “1873”. An interesting part of the composition is the back wall which has three separate oval portraits of a man and two sons. Housed in a modern gilt frame. A well detailed and interesting portrayal of a well to do family. SIZE: 36″ x 40″. CONDITION: Relined, restored with inpainting. 9-98893 (4,000-6,000)
