LEON JOSEPH FLORENTIN BONNAT (French, 1833-1922) “CONCERT”. The scene is after a work by the Dutch painter Jacob Van Loo (1614-1670). There are two versions known by Loo, one in the Hermitage Museum and the Museum of Art Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid. Bonnat was known to be an expert and collector of Dutch paintings and frequently copied the work of the Old Masters. Outstanding oil on canvas scene shows a young man and woman seated at a table with colorful tablecloth while three musicians are serenading them. A woman with gold dress plays a cello, a man sings while playing a mandolin and a girl plays the flute. They are all seated and standing on a black and white checkerboard floor in an open air building supported by columns overlooking a landscape under blue and white cloud sky. Signed lower right “L. Bonnat 1873″. SIZE: 31″ x 24”. PROVENANCE: Descended through the family of George C. Paitchadze (1928-1996), Distinguished scientist, professor, historian, Laureat of State Premium of Georgia. According to the family, he purchased the work in one of the Moscow antique stores on Arbat Street, across from Vakhtangov Theater. It was told to the purchaser that it belonged to a Russian noble family of Trubetskoy. This information is provided by Irina Sokolova of the Hermitage Museum.
