IVAN FEDOROVICH CHOULTSE (Russian, 1877-1932) “WINTER SCENE IN THE ALPS MOUNTAINS, MARCH 1935”. Outstanding oil on canvas winter scene shows several homes in a valley covered with recently fallen snow which has covered the rooftops, trees, mountains and stream banks. The valley floor is accented by a winding stream flowing towards the foreground. A large Evergreen is shown on the stream bank, laden with snow. A line of tall mountains covered with snow is shown in the background under blue and white cloud sky. Signed lower right “Iw. F. Choultse”. Housed in an old and possibly original gesso decorated gilt frame. SIZE: 26″ x 32″. PROVENANCE: Woolworth Collection (FW Woolworth, Dept. Store). CONDITION: Unrestored, craquelure. A 2″ slit in center right mountain, discolored varnish and surface grime. This painting will brighten considerably under a cleaning. 9-96544 (40,000-60,000)
