HANDSOME ANTIQUE POWDER HORN WITH WONDERFUL CONTEMPORARY SCRIMSHAW. The antique horn having a wonderful modern scrimshaw inscription “Col. Wm. Thompson/Carlisle, Pennsylvania/Batten of Riflemen/Made June ye 25 1775”. Also a depiction of a large town with three churches, a bird and trailing vine. Toward the butt plug end “Ye Town of Carlisle” and a pot of flowers. This later scrim may be period to the horn. William Thompson was a Brigadier General in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He was appointed Colonel of a rifle battalion in 1775 and was sent to Massachusetts to help in the defense of Boston. His unit was known as “Thompson’s Pennsylvania Rifle Battalion”.
