This revolver has the usual conventional left hand twist rifling as is found in the 44 rimfire revolvers, however this one additionally has dished lands of a style not previously noted by this cataloger. Only about 1,800 of these rare revolvers were produced in their own serial range in period 1875-1880. By the time these revolvers had reached the market the rimfire calibers had been superceded by centerfire cartridges and they found little or no acceptance on the American market. Therefore the majority of them were sold into markets where the rimfire rifles & carbines were still popular, primarily throughout Mexico & South America. Accompanied by a Colt factory letter identifying this revolver, as found, with wood grip shipped to Wexell & DeGress, Mexico City, Mexico and New York on May 23, 1879 in a shipment of 50 same type revolvers. Under the remarks section it states that “The records also contain a second listing for this serial number that indicates that it was included in a shipment of four guns to Hartley & Graham in New York on Nov. 6, 1882.” PROVENANCE: David Crocker Estate Collection. CONDITION: Good, all matching including bbl & cyl, grip is unnumbered. No orig finish remains being a cleaned gray metal patina with darker patina around muzzle and in sheltered areas. Grip shows moderate to heavy wear with numerous age lines and retains a wonderful mellow ivory patina. Lock bolt & base pin screws are replacements. Hammer is not solid in half cock notch, otherwise mechanics are fine. Very bright shiny bore. 4-36843 JR4 (4,000-6,000)
