IMPORTANT GROTESQUE CARVED FOLK ART PINE CONSOLE TABLE. Last quarter of the 19th Century. The rectangular tray top with wavy-molded edges above the conforming wide frieze fancifully carved with grotesque theatrical masks on the corners, the ends each carved with the face of a bearded gentleman. The front apron carved with a displayed eagle in high relief, flanked by two seated gentlemen wearing long coats and brimmed hats, further flanked by flags. The legs in the form of carved leaftip and scrolled corbels, raised on ‘S’-scrolled, knuckled, and acanthus-carved feet. SIZE: 28-1/2″ h. x 41″ w. x 21-1/4″ d. PROVENANCE: Discovered in an Ohio farmhouse. CONDITION: The top with heavily weathered surface and shrinkage crack through center. Original white paint, scrubbed on top, discolored on table base. Structural damages as follows: one leg missing on seated gentleman, half of one eagle foot missing, damages to two feet on table. 9-93249 (4,000-7,000)
