FOUR-BLOCK APPLIQUE QUILT WITH EAGLES AND ROSES BORDER, SOUTHEAST PENNSYLVANIA. Circa 1856. Maker unknown. Construction of quilt is four 33” appliquéd blocks in center with 13-1/2” border. Applique blocks have intertwined stems with flowers and pomegranates. Each block has three tiny birds appliquéd on the vines. In the very center is a star surrounded by four butterflies. Border has eight (displayed) eagles with shields above crossed (laurel) leaves. Center of each border has quarter-moon shape appliqué, with bouquets of roses in the corners. Quilted in white thread at 12 stitches per inch. All appliqué shapes are outlined in the background, veins quilted on large leaves. Background quilted with various small motifs including pineapples, scissors, flowers, stars, leaves, crossed spoons, pitchers, and many hearts. One border with the initials “LH” and “SAH” quilted on either side of the moon shape, with the date “1856” above the moon and intertwined hearts below it. Two houses are quilted in the center near the star. Fabric is all solid cottons in green, turkey red, yellow, cheddar, and blue (in the shields). Batting is very thin cotton, backing is white matching front. Edge finish is a separate 1/4” green binding, hand applied. SIZE: 94” x 94-1/2”. PROVENANCE: PA Quilt & Textile Museum. CONDITION: Faded.
