IMPORTANT CARVED AND PAINTED TOBACCONIST FIGURE OF A TURK. Second quarter 19th Century, Salem, Massachusetts. This nearly life size figure realistically carved depicting a Middle Eastern or Turkish personage wearing a turban. The figure is dressed in a short sleeved tunic cinched at the waist, his right hand extended holding a sheaf of tobacco. Both wrists are carved as if wearing wide bracelets. The figure is rendered standing, one foot slightly forward on a box base. The head and torso carved from the solid, the head drilled at the top of the cranium and plugged. The extended right arm joined at the elbow. Both shoed feet joined just in front of the ankle. Most unique in this carving is the facial details and expression, especially the broad forehead and almond shaped eyes creating a remote visage, also the realistic achievement of the carved sheaf of tobacco. Of the Turkish or Sultan carved figures sold over the last several years at auction this is perhaps the most unusual. SIZE: 66″ h overall, 58″ h of figure. CONDITION: The carved pine figure with original painted surfaces. The head, to the tunic collar, stained a chocolate or walnut brown, conforming with the color of the tobacco sheaf and right hand. The tunic, along with the rest of the figure, with the original faded gold or mustard paint. There are multiple, but minor, shrinkage cracks throughout. The sheaf of tobacco has been reattached. The application of a metal support is a later addition. The box base is early if not original. 9-97822 (60,000-80,000)
