GEORGE WASHINGTON MEDALLION QUILT, MANHEIM, LANCASTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA. Circa 1880. Wrought by Anna May Ensminger. The center is a 18″ x 20″ red rectangle onto which has been appliqued an oval cutout of George Washington on horseback. The bandanna used was printed for the Centennial celebration in 1876. Around bandanna are squares in cotton prints, each measuring 1-1/2″ to 1-3/4″ (2,088 total squares), arranged by dark and light into a center diamond arrangement, with 5-1/2″ border of a madder brown paisley stripe. Oval with Washington is cross-hatched, with feather wreath quilted in the red around oval. In the corners are circles and fleur-de-lis. Squares have been quilted with straight lines in both directions through the middle of the squares. Border is quilted with scallops. Brown thread used on the darker fabrics, and off-white on the lighter fabrics. Hand quilted with 6-7 stitches per inch. Very thin cotton batting. Front to back 1/4″ binding and a brown striped print fabric. SIZE: 88″ x 90″. PROVENANCE: The quilt was passed down through the Ensminger/Kready family of Manheim, then acquired by the PA Quilt & Textile Museum – Lititz, PA.
